Sometimes we can get a little overwhelmed when it comes to teaching our kids about God… we know how important it is, but where do we start?

Trust me, I’ve been there. I felt the weight of this HUGE responsibility to teach my daughter about God, even before she was born.

But I’m here to tell you it doesn’t have to be scary or overwhelming. First of all, this weight can be lifted off of by us as parents ASKING God to help us. That’s step one.

He desires for our kids to know and love Him, so of course, He is going to help and be with us every step of the way.

Parenting is hard, and that’s why I want to help and give you some practical ways when it comes to teaching your toddlers about God with SIMPLE things you can do every day! Toddlers are more capable than we may think, and it’s important to start instilling a love for God in them even at a young age.

Let’s go ahead and get into these tips!

1. Read Simple Bible Verses

One easy way you can teach your toddlers about God daily is to read some simple verses each day. Build it into your routine, and make it simple.

Read a verse or two before breakfast, during quiet time, before bed. Doing this day in and day out with have a MAJOR impact of your toddler as they grow.

I’ve even got some great tips on teaching your toddlers to actually memorize scripture – yes, it is possible! 🙌🏻

Where should you start? Here are 30 short yet impactful verses you can start reading with them, or try reading through the Psalms since they are all praises. 🙂

2. Read Short Devotionals

Reading a devotional each day as a family can be a great way to help build God into your daily life, not just for your toddlers, but for the whole family as well.

Whether you decide to do a family devotion or even one that is just for your kids to grow closer to God, this can point kids back to Christ and teach them about Him in a way they can understand.

I’ve even got a mini Family Bible Guide you can download for FREE!

It’s a great way to introduce your little kids to the Bible – it includes 3 familiar Bible stories, each with a scripture/summary, key point, questions, and simple prayer to repeat.

This is a great done-for-you way to start incorporating family discipleship into your family’s life. 🙂

3. Pray At Bedtime

Praying before bedtime can be built into your daily routine, and is a great way to send your precious kiddos off to dreamland. Let the Word of God be that last thing they think about before sleep.

Here is a phenomenal post on short, simple bedtime prayers for toddlers to pray! You can pray first and then guide them with each line, or pick out a small phrase they can say, depending on their age level.

4. Pray Before Meals

Another easy way to start incorporating God into your daily life is by making pre-meal prayer a habit!

Simple phrases such as “Thank you Lord for our food,” and “Thank you for providing this meal,” are good places to start. But you don’t have to have it limited to just food-related.

Sometimes my daughter will pray before dinner and say something like, “Thank you for our blessing us and help us sleep well.”

Does it necessarily have to do with mealtime? Not really, hah! But is the point to get her in the habit of praying? Yes!

5. Pray About Anything And Everything

Are you sensing a theme here?

Prayer!

Prayer is such an easy way you can incorporate God into your daily routine, and so important too. It’s never too early to start teaching your kids to pray!

It doesn’t have to be a big, complicated thing either. We are simply setting up a spiritual foundation for our toddlers to be comfortable and open to the idea of praying on their own!

When we pray about everything with them, they see it as a daily thing to do, totally natural (which it is) and something they can achieve themselves. Thank you prayers, bedtime prayers, mealtime prayers, situational prayers, and even just “thank you God for this day,” are great places to start.

Crosswalk.com has a great article on some simple and easy prayers your kids can pray, for any situation such as praying for friends, when they are feeling sad, etc.

6. Listen To Worship Music

How many times do you blast some kid tunes in the car or when you are playing around the house?

Go ahead and replace those ABC songs with some awesome scripture music for kids! Or any worship song really. 😊

Here are 25 kids’ worship songs with videos/motions that they will love!

Like I mentioned, this can be applied when you’re in the car headed to the store, or at home during the day.

If we aren’t watching some sort of faith-based TV show (more on that next!), then we usually have worship music playing on the speaker or through youtube on our TV.

Our kids learn numbers, colors, shapes, and different concepts through song… learning about God can be applied this way too!

And you’ll be surprised at how easily they can pick up on the words and even memorize them.

Some of our favorite worship music are CD’s from Seeds Family Worship – they help teach scripture memory in a super fun and easy way!

7. Watch Christian TV Shows

As much as we love watching Daniel Tiger and Doc McStuffins, those can easily be swapped out for some great Christian TV shows!

Here are 19 fantastic Christian TV shows for kids, most can be found on Amazon Prime or DVD! Some of our favorites are What’s In The Bible With Buck Denver, Veggie Tales, and Superbook .

8. Read Godly Books

It’s probably safe to say that when you had your first (or even second and third) child, you were suddenly FLOODED with baby books?

Reading to our kids is so beneficial for them, and something that can easily be done every day! Throw in some great godly books, and you have now introduced God to your toddlers in a fun way, while also helping their brain development.

Here are a few of our favorite godly books to read:

9. Practice Scripture Memory

This one may take a liiiiittle more effort than the others but it is still great to try and do every day!

It doesn’t have to be stressful either, especially with these simple ways to teach scripture memory to your kids.

Basically, start with short and easy to understand Bible verses, and go over each one as many times as needed. Find verses that are easy to explain too! You can even pick the same verse to do each day for a week.

This can be done after breakfast, before bedtime, or in any downtime throughout the day.

Remember, it’s a slow and steady process, not a race! 🙂

10. Repeat Biblical Daily Affirmations

Positively affirming your toddlers every day is a great way not only to teach them about God, but help boost their confidence too!

Specifically, biblical affirmations can help your toddler grow more confident in who they are in Christ while learning more about Him too. When we speak life over ourselves and our kids, it makes a difference!

11. Go Outside!

Want an easy way to show your toddlers about God daily, which you probably already do? Go outside!!

God is all around us through His creation – birds, trees, our vehicles, worms… you name it! This is such a fun way to do this too. It gets you out of the house and helps your toddlers explore while learning more about who God is as Creator.

We love this nature scavenger hunt from Kristen at Arrows & Applesauce. We have tons of fun getting outside in the fresh air, and then talk about how God makes each of these things on the list!

So much fun! We added the bird 😉

12. Do Bible Activities

13. Always Give God Thanks

A super SIMPLE way we can point our toddlers to Christ each day is to give thanks to God for everything!

This is such an easy and effective way to teach your little ones about the goodness of God. That everything we have is from Him – and a good reminder for us too, right??

Teaching your toddlers to give God thanks in everything could look like this…

“Thank you God for providing food to cook.”

“Thank you God for healing my boo-boo.”

“Thank you God for waking us up this morning.”

The list could go on!!

Some more daily things to thank God for – the sunshine, the birds singing… things your little kids would easily understand and recognize, which leads to them thanking him for bigger things later down the road as they grow. You have instilled that habit now in them! 🙂

This is also a great method to use when teaching your kids to pray – it all goes back to having a thankful and grateful heart.

14. Use Bathtime As A Spiritual Reminder

Who knew that bathtime could have a spiritual meaning right??

This is the perfect VISUAL opportunity to teach kids about not only baptism but how Jesus washes our sins away and makes us “clean” again. Just like the bubbles do. 😉

As you scrub away the dirt and they dunk themselves under the water, remind them this is exactly what Jesus did for us.

15. Live It Out Yourself!

This may be is the MOST important way to teach your toddler about God… you have to live it out yourself daily through your words and actions.

How can we expect our toddlers and young children to learn about God, when we aren’t showing His character in how we live our daily lives?

We have to make sure we are in God’s Word every day, and imitating Christ in our thoughts, words, and actions.

We know how much toddlers grab on to, and as their parents, they are watching our every move. The biggest way we can really teach them about God is to SHOW them by intentional, biblical living, and speaking life over them!

Are we perfect? Of course not!

And that’s a good thing to point out to our kids too – even Mommy and Daddy don’t have it all together. We make mistakes. We need Jesus too.

But we strive for it daily, don’t we? I sure hope so! 🙂
