It’s easy to say, just wake up before the kids so you aren’t rushed, and you are good to go, right?
Ummm… not necessarily!
For the longest time, I would let my daughter wake me up in the mornings (I still do some days especially in summer… I looove my sleep) but I noticed when I implemented this new morning routine, my days started getting… better!
Did my circumstances always change? No.
Did my responses to said circumstances change? Yes.
These 6 steps will help you achieve a totally doable morning routine to start your day off with a refreshed Spirit and prepared for whatever your day may hold!
Let’s get right into it!
1. Your Morning Routine Starts The Night Before
Just the other day, my husband said something to me and it made me smile from ear to ear.
“Wow babe, you were right! When I started packing my lunch and getting my clothes ready the night before work, I got out of the house so much quicker!!”
Music to a wife’s ears right???
But it’s so true! When we prepare for the next morning the night before, it makes all the difference.
Here are some things you can do to start your [tomorrow] off right:
- Set out your clothes the night before (doesn’t have to be fancy, just something comfy if you are a stay-at-home mom!)
- Grab your study Bible, devotional, journal & a pen, and place them on your nightstand
- Decide on what you are going to make for breakfast and prep if you can
- Set your alarm and make sure the volume is up
- Turn off all electronics at least 30 minutes to an HOUR before bedtime to get your mind right!
These simple steps the night before will set you up for success the next day! This leads us to the next step…
2. Wake Up Before Your Kids Get Up
This one can be SO tough as a momma to little ones. Sometimes, you have no idea when they are going to wake up! Or maybe they wake up all night long.
The point isn’t to have the “perfect” morning routine every day, but having it set in place for the mornings it DOES work.
For example, my daughter usually wakes up around 7:30 but plays in her room until 8, when her okay to wake clock turns green.
So I would set my alarm for 6:45 AM, give me some time to wake up, and then be up by 7 to get started on my quiet time and prayer.
There is just something SO calming and peaceful about being the only one up. It’s like the Lord keeps the world still so you can hear without distraction.
Do I do this every day? I can’t sit here and say yes. But, on the days I DO wake up earlier I am SO much more at peace and not feeling rushed.
Also, if you are in a season where babies are keeping you up, or you have early risers… bring them in on the routine! Let them see you read your Bible and pray, and know this is the best way to start our days.
And of course, something you always want to do before and after reading your Bible…
3. Kneeling Prayer at Your Bedside
If you have time for nothing else… always make time to pray!
That communication with God and being in tune with the Holy Spirit is VITAL to your Christian walk and to your day. Make the first thing you do when you wake up kneeling by your bedside in prayer.
What does kneeling represent? Surrendering your day to God!
Ask Him to open your heart and mind to be open to see what God is doing around you, in you, and through you. You can also pray for your family and others:
- Pray for your spouse – that God will protect him from temptation and give him endurance and strength to work hard.
- Pray for your kids – that God will protect them and encourage them in their day too.
- Pray for others – pray for anyone or anything else you feel God laying on your heart.
This sets the tone for your day to be in tune with the Holy Spirit and have an open heart to handle whatever circumstances come your way. 🙂
This is a perfect setting leading up to the next step…
4. Scripture Before Smart Phone
We can only fill others the way God intends (our kids, spouse, friends) when WE are being filled as well. As moms and keepers of the home, we need to be in God’s Word daily!
And this is BEFORE we look at our smartphones. Scripture before smartphones!
I am so guilty of waking up and what is the first thing I do? Check my phone – Facebook, emails, etc., and the next thing you know I’m rushing to get up and haven’t given my first thoughts of the day to Heaven.
When I started my day in God’s Word, my mind was RIGHT. I was more patient, more aware, and more prepared for whatever attacks the enemy had planned that day.
This led to the day not feeling rushed and overwhelmed, which makes a HUGE difference.
I was able to see things and respond in ways I probably wouldn’t have, had I not started off my day doing these SUPER important things!
And if you don’t get to wake up before your kids, guess what? You can still read your Bible!
Actually, there are incredible benefits to letting your kids see you reading your Bible. It helps encourage their faith as well! So don’t let the fact that you overslept or didn’t get up deter you from daily reading in God’s Word.
And of course, something you always want to do before and after reading your Bible…
5. Listen To God Speak And Journal It
Sometimes we think once we have prayed, read the Bible and journal a few thoughts, we are ready to go, right??
Nope!
It’s always so important to give God time to speak before the chaos and distractions come up. That happens sometimes and we miss out on what He is saying to us.
It’s important to build out some time (start with maybe 5-10 minutes or until the kids come running!) and just sit with a piece of paper – or a great Bible journal – and wait to see what God reveals to you.
You can even get your kids started on Bible journaling as well – in fact, grab this colorable Bible journal here made specifically for kids. 😉
Sometimes you may have a blank piece of paper and that’s okay. Just be ready and willing to hear from God!
Go ahead and jot down any of the following:
- Revelations God is showing you
- Thoughts and feelings about what you just read
- Prayers
- Verses that stuck out to you
This is so important to do because you can look back later and see how God has been working in your life!
I have journals FILLED from years ago, and every once in a while I will go back and look to see just how God has worked things out (WAY different than I thought, thank goodness 🙌🏻).
It helps to strengthen my faith SO much and reminds me of the bigger picture God has for my life – and yours too!
6. Eat A Healthy Breakfast
You know what they say, breakfast is the most important meal of the day!
And that is pretty true! You’ve already filled your mind with spiritual food, and now it’s time to fill your body with physical food – but not just any junky breakfast.
Food that will give you energy and help you be prepared for the day!
This could also be a part of the “prepare the night before” section, that way you aren’t scrambling in the morning to try and make something, and be tempted to skip or grab something out of the house.
Here’s a GREAT selection of easy healthy breakfast options for busy moms!!
Again, please hear me say this… life happens! If there is one morning where things aren’t going as planned, give yourself grace and grab that pop-tart. Tomorrow is a new day! 🙂
Congrats, you’ve now set your Christian morning routine and are ready to take on the day!!

What does your current morning routine look like? Which steps will you start implementing into your daily routine? Let me know in the comments!
I love this! You are so right that we need to be filled in order to fill others, and honestly yesterday was rough! I was tired, impatient, and short fused but today is a new day and I definitely needed this. Thank you!
Thank you so much for your comment! You are so welcome, I am glad this helped. <3 As moms we definitely tend to pour, pour, pour, and in turn can make us run on fumes and feel very overwhelmed. I notice a huge difference when I start my day in the Word! 🙂
I used to do almost all of these things! But then my now 3 year old learned how to get out of his crib and wakes up at 5am. He’s pretty ridiculous abd is never quiet so my mornings have become filled with chaos. He’s up then his older sisters are up by 6:30. I also have a newborn. I need some ideas for how to do this WITH the kids around …. But I love your post anyway!
Thank you so much for sharing! I’m so happy you enjoyed the post! I can definitely relate, it really depends on what season of life you were in. Before my daughter turned one I don’t think she ever slept through the night, it was rough! That 5 AM is tough, so sorry you are going through that. 🙁 God is still using this time to help grow you and is there with you in the midst of the chaos! Whether it’s 5 minutes before breakfast or prayers throughout the day, staying in communication with Him is key! Each season will look different, but that’s the beauty of a growing and changing relationship with God. <3
That is a great idea for a blog post, I am going to pray about it and write about ways to spend time with God WITH the kids around. Thank you!!
My thought is include the kids, when you have no other option.
1) It’s good for them to have these habits and see you doing them, too. 2) I say “when you have no other option” because it’s important to have “mama time” when the kids aren’t there, needing your attention and time. Including them shouldn’t be another check mark on the to-do list of life. If they’re there, great! Include them! If they aren’t, carry on!
This morning routine is amazing and wonderful! Don’t let it be a rigid “have to do just right and in order and just as it’s written.” Leave room to make it work for your life, which the author makes clear is the goal. Make it work for your life. And give yourself grace!
Mindy, thanks for the great post. I needed this today. Praise God and grateful for your articles.
Thank you so much for sharing! I am so glad you were encouraged. 🙂 God knows exactly what we need at the right time!
