Sometimes, I think we tend to overlook the Psalms when it comes to teaching our kids about the Bible.

We usually focus on the stories in the Bible, which are great! Daniel, Joseph, David, Jesus’ teachings… all things that are super important and that we SHOULD be teaching our kids.

But there is something so beautiful about hiding the Psalms in our hearts. They are praises to God!

These 16 Psalms are what I believe some of the most important Bible verses to start memorizing with your children.

Most of these Psalms for children listed are 1-3 verses, making it easier when teaching them to memorize just a few at a time!

Then, you can work your way up to the whole passage once they have mastered it. Feel free to use some fun and practical Bible activities at home too to help!

You can read these Psalms before breakfast, at bedtime, and throughout the day. Either way, you can rest assured that your kids are learning God’s Word every day through one of the most beautiful books of the Bible. 🙂

16 Psalms For Children To Memorize:

** These are all from the NIV translation; I believe it’s easiest to read, especially for kids, while staying close to the original translation.

Psalm 4:8

“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety.”

This is such an amazing Psalm to teach your kids for bedtime. What better way to send them off to dreamland than for them to know God will watch over them in slumber?

Psalm 121:1

“I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.”

When our kids are facing difficult situations, this is a great Psalm for them to have memorized. It’s important for them to know that their help comes from God, the creator!

Psalm 139:13-14

“For You formed my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

Oh, how beautiful is this Psalm! This would be a great one to read all the way through once they have this memorized.

Such a wonderful reminder for kids (and adults too!) that God KNOWS them, and created them the exact way that they are.

Psalm 30:4

“Sing to the LORD, O you His saints, and praise His holy name.”

This is a great praise Psalm to repeat daily! Remind your children how important it is to praise God’s Holy name.

Psalm 9:1-2

“I will give thanks to the LORD with all my heart; I will recount all Your wonders. I will be glad and rejoice in You; I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High.”

A great reminder to give thanks to God, and that our joy comes form Him alone. More praise from your children to the Lord!

Psalm 16:8

“I have set the LORD always before me. Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.”

This Psalm is a great one for kids to have in their minds when unknown and scary circumstances come their way. It reminds them that because they are in God’s hands, nothing can shake them!

Psalm 19:8

“The precepts of the LORD are right, bringing joy to the heart; the commandments of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes.”

This is a great reminder for kids to understand the importance of God’s laws. He loves us and doesn’t want harm to come to us – rather, when we obey Him, we can have joy!

Psalm 20:4

“May He give you the desires of your heart and make all your plans succeed.”

I personally love this verse, and it got me through some tough times in my life! When we help our kids focus on what GOD wants for them, and pray HIS desires over their life, then they’ve got it!!

Psalm 27:4

“One thing I have asked of the LORD; this is what I desire: to dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the LORD and seek Him in His temple.”

This Psalm reminds children of the importance of salvation and eternal life in heaven.

Psalm 34:18

“The LORD is near to the brokenhearted; He saves the contrite in spirit.”

Although we never want to see our kids hurt, this is a great Psalm for kids to have memorized when they are experiencing pain in this world!

This is a beautiful reminder that God is near to them and empathizes with them when they are feeling down or defeated.

Psalm 27:1

“The LORD is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life— whom shall I dread?”

AMEN! When your kids know that God is with them, there’s no need to fear. Nothing in this world can shake them!

Psalm 51:10

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”

This Psalm helps kids evaluate their own attitudes and behaviors, and can be a great way for them to ask forgiveness and for God to create a “right spirit” in them.

Psalm 55:17

“Morning, noon, and night, I cry out in distress, and He hears my voice.”

This is another great verse for kids to have memorized when they are facing difficult trials. Or just wondering if God hears them when they pray… He does!!

Psalm 119:11

“I have hidden Your word in my heart that I might not sin against You.”

This Psalm is actually referenced so many times in Christianity… and for good reason! When we hide God’s Words in our hearts, it helps us flee temptation from sin, and live righteously.

Psalm 119:105

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

Another very well-known Psalm, but so important AND simple for kids to memorize! This is a great one to remind them that God’s Word is the only light and guide we should follow in this world.

It is THE light!

Psalm 127:3

“Children are indeed a heritage from the LORD, and the fruit of the womb is His reward.”

This Psalm is as much for parents as it is for kids, but so important for them to know. Positively affirm your kids, teach them, and remind them how much of a BLESSING they are to you. ❤
