Do you find yourself being closer to grumbling and complaining lately, rather than thankfulness and gratitude?

It happens to us all, but thankfully (no pun intended) God gives us some amazing verses about having a heart of thanksgiving in His Word. 🙌🏻

Here are 20 thankful scriptures you can read with your family, starting today!

Thankful Scriptures To Read With Your Family

We’ve all had one of those days or seasons, right??

It seems like everything is against you.

You were late dropping your kids off at school, it started to rain, you spilled your drink on your favorite shirt, the car broke down on the way home… any of this sound familiar?

Or maybe you are going through some SUPER serious issues such as health problems (we have had a lot of that this year), infertility, the passing of someone close, just looking at the Facebook newsfeed.

It’s easy to look around and say, “God, WHAT in the world do I have to be thankful for right now?”

And boy does He show us in His Word – 20 times at least that we will see – exactly what we have to be thankful for, and that He is worthy to be praised, REGARDLESS of our circumstances. 🙌🏻

Being thankful isn’t just a mindset to have during the holiday season or something to add to your Fall bucket list!

It’s a lifestyle and continual renewal of our minds every day to think this way, and these verses help do that.

These verses would be great to memorize these verses with your kids! It would serve as a great reminder for them (and you) to have on hand when that grumbling spirit tries to make its way out!

When it comes to reading Bible verses about being thankful in scripture, we want to make sure to keep these 3 things in mind:

  • Being thankful means having peace whether your circumstances change or not
  • Thankfulness is not about what we phsycially have
  • TRUE thankfulness and contentment can only come from God

So, keeping those things in mind, let’s take a look at these scriptures about being thankful, and pray through them when we feel those feelings of discontentment creeping up…

Prayer of Thanksgiving

We can’t have this list of thankful scriptures without ending it with a prayer of thanksgiving.

Feel free to read this verbatim, or personalize it to your own life and circumstances right now! <3

Father God, I come to You right now with an open heart and mind to hear what You have to say. God, I thank You for who You are, thank You for Your loving-kindness, and for all that You have done for me in my life. I ask that You help me to remain thankful in all circumstances, always remembering the good news of the Gospel and what You have done for me. Lord, I pray against the spirit of grumbling and complaining and against discontentment in my life. I also pray for my family, that You would protect them from this as well. I pray for Unity in our hearts and minds, and that we always remember that YOU are good no matter what the world says. Bless us with thankful hearts, let us be cheerful and all that we do because we want to glorify You. Amen.
