Chances are, if you are reading this post you care about your marriage, right? Otherwise, this wouldn’t have caught your attention!
I’m SO glad that you have taken the first step.
My husband and I have such a passion for marriage, and continually wanting to do things to make it the best we can. We have personally used MANY of these resources and I can attest at how great they are!
These resources are all biblically based because we believe the ultimate purpose for marriage is to bring glory to God and show a picture of the Gospel to others.
Why We Should Invest Into Our Marriages
Let’s talk a little bit about why it’s even important to invest in our marriages.
When you invest in things, you receive a significant return. For example, if you invest in your bank account, you’ll have something to show for that at the end of the year.
What would happen if you let your bank account sit there and never put any money in? Or one step further, took out $1 every day?
You’d have no money left!!
It’s the same with our marriages. The more you invest, the greater return you will see in your marriage. When you both start seeing each other as one another’s perfect gift from God, you will both be focused on meeting the other’s needs! Thus, on your way to having the marriage you both always dreamed of!
Remember when you and your spouse were dating, how you continually pursued each other? If I didn’t hear from my husband (boyfriend at the time) at least once a day I would be worried!
We both were always doing things to show how much we loved and appreciated one another. That doesn’t stop when you get married. If anything, we should pursue our spouses more!
How To Schedule Time With Your Spouse Each Week
This sounds great and all, but we understand how life gets. We have kids, schedules, church activities, jobs, households to take care of… so how can we make sure we set aside time to invest in our marriages?
Here are some practical ways to do this:
- Commit to one night a week
- Be willing to say no to other things
- Plan in advance for that night
My husband and I do our “intentional time for marriage” every Thursday. We made a commitment that this was OUR night – that meant saying no to other things!
Things come up and that’s totally understandable, but committing to that one night every week is the important part, even if it’s a different night.
When we don’t plan for something, we are more likely to plan something else in its place.
We will usually set aside about 30 minutes on Sundays to talk about our weekly schedules and plan “our night.”
Say you plan your night to have 2 hours after the kid’s go to bed to invest in your marriage. What does this look like?
I recommend reading one of these marriage resources listed below for part of the time and talking about it, then do something fun! Play a game, ask questions or connect with your spouse on an intimate level.
Not Married Yet?
So, what if you aren’t yet married, just dating or engaged? You may be thinking this doesn’t apply to you.
Actually, it does!
I would highly encourage reading these BEFORE getting married!
You wouldn’t sign up for a chess tournament if you’ve never played before! You never prepared or studied it, just hoping for the best! That would be crazy.
It’s the same with our marriages – practice and prepare to have the best marriage you can! Remember, what you both put in is what you’ll receive out of it.
We have been heard time and time again from more experienced couples. They wish they would have invested in their marriages more before they got married or very early on, to save a looot of heartache.
Don’t wait 10 years into your marriage to invest in it, start now!
10 Best Christian Marriage Books
You made it to the good stuff! 🙂
Here are some of our FAVORITE resources that we believe will help strengthen your marriages…
1. Love & Respect: by Emmerson Eggerichs
While these aren’t in any particular order, this is definitely our #1 resource that has made the biggest impact in our marriage.
“However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.”
ephesians 5:33
The main concept in this book is that women need love and men need respect. We love and respect each other out of reverence for Christ. When we take our focus off of ourselves and set our sights on Him, He helps us to respond rightly to our spouses.
We LOVE this one!!
2. The 5 Love Languages: by Gary Chapman
This book focuses on learning each other’s “love languages.” They are:
- Words of Affirmation
- Physical Touch
- Quality Time
- Receiving Gifts
- Acts of Service
When we know those about each other we can speak to their hearts and souls more effectively.
3. Wife After God: by Jennifer Smith
This is one of my favorite devotionals as a wife!
It gives a daily story, scripture, prayer, and challenge to do. It really helped me not only grow in our marriage but individually as a wife. It’s a great daily devo if you are looking for one! I have the kindle version making it easy for me to access anywhere.
She has TONS more wife and marriage resources on her website, and her story is so beautiful. She also has devotionals on praying for your kids, and a daily prayer you can have sent straight to your email!
4. Husband After God: by Aaron Smith
This is the author of the previous book’s husband. They are an amazing godly couple! and he has some great resources for your husband too!
5. The Love Dare Day by Day: A Year of Devotionals For Couples by Stephen & Alex Kendrick
This is a great daily devotional for couples! We will do this one before bed every night; it usually takes about 15-20 minutes. Each devo has an encourging note, scripture, and some questions to talk about after reading!
6. Two As One: Connecting Daily With Christ & Your Spouse: by Ryan & Selena Frederick
This book is so great! It’s a full 30 days of devotionals for couples.
Each day has 4 sections:
- SEE– an image with an inspirational quote
- READ– scripture and commentary to read
- REFLECT & APPLY – answer discussion questions together thoughtfully
- PRAY – each of you can write a short prayer in this section of what God is teaching you
I would definitely recommend using this one for your weekly “intentional” time together! It’s a great way to grow closer to each other and God by digging a little deeper.
7. Wife In Pursuit: 31 Daily Challenge by Selena Frederick
This and the next one are both daily challenges to help you show love to your spouse!
This one is for wives to read and show love to their husbands. They aren’t exactly the same, each day for both books have different activities and prayers for your spouse!
Each day includes an encouraging word from the author, reflection questions, a pray section, and a practical way to act out on what you’ve read.
8. Husband In Pursuit: 31 Daily Challenge by Ryan Frederick
This is the husband’s version. 🙂
9. Fall In Love, Stay In Love: by Willard F. Harley
We read this book during our premarital counseling. Our biggest take away was when he talked about “love deposits.”
We want to always make deposits in our spouse’s love bank, not withdrawals!
10. You & Me Forever: Marriage in Light of Eternity by Francis & Lisa Chan
This book was probably the most challenging we’ve read. It really takes your mind off of you, your spouse and practical tips, and really focuses on marriage in light of the Gospel. It is a great read!
And there ya have it, folks! I hope you and your spouse are motivated and encouraged to invest in your marriage.
I pray that some of these resources bless your marriage as much as they have ours. 🙂
