Winter is right around the corner and with it comes, matching family pajamas, hot chocolates, winter movies, gingerbread houses, sugar cookies, and snowman building!

These are the fun things about winter but with the frosty season also comes runny noses, chilled toes, and freezing fingers. That’s why for me, there’s absolutely no better feeling than curling up with my family in our cozy home after a long and cold winter day.

Don’t get me wrong… we LOVE winter. I always joke that that’s why my husband and I got married – our mutual love for the cold weather over hot.

Buuuut if you’re like me and you’re wondering how you can cozy up your home and fill it with family winter vibes without breaking the bank, you’ve landed on the right page!

After all, while making your home cozy for winter is a great idea, if your kids are anything like my daughter, you probably also need to keep some money aside for all the toys that made it on the Santa wish list this year. 😉

That’s why to help you add coziness to your home this winter, I’ve listed below some simple, affordable, and easy to achieve decorating tips! Ready?

1. Warm-Up Your Interior with Rugs

Adding comfy and soft shag rugs to some of your rooms can not only help add texture and some elegance to your interior, but it’s also a fantastic way to add warmth and jazz up the winter feel in your home.

While tiled floors, hardwood, and laminate flooring look beautiful, they can feel cold in winter under our feet. That’s why adding some rugs on your floors can be an easy way to instantly make everyone feel warmer at home.

Our old home was built on a concrete slab with NO carpet, so we had rugs in every room!

Layering rugs is a great way to provide your children with a comfy space to play on too. My daughter loves playing on her rug in the basement!

If you need some inspiration, I love this beautiful rug from Amazon as it’s both stylish, looks cozy, and inviting for winter. It’s also very neutral, making it great for any decor!

Ross is great place to shop for rugs for very cheap – I found a cute gray and white pattern rug, 8×10, for only $50!! Amazon also has some beautiful rugs as well.

2. Cozy Up Your Home with Blankets, Throws, and Pillows

Nothing screams coziness and snuggle time more beautiful holiday-themed throw pillows or chunky knitted blankets.

To warm up my space, I usually use rich textures, layer throws, and blankets (yep, as you can tell I love layering in winter), and add them to the bedrooms and the living area.

For example, when fall comes, I usually add a plush throw at the foot of my bed. Which if I am being honest, makes it both really inviting and hard to resist!

I will add some comfy throw blankets to my daughter’s bed too. G loves them! Her favorite thing is to curl up in either a blanket on the couch OR my snuggie (yes I have a snuggie) on the couch when we’re watching TV as a family.

You can even make your own throws or blankets together with your kids as a fun project. Here’s a great tutorial on knitting chunky blankets!

Another thing you can do is add a couple of comfortable textured pillows to your couch and to your bed, and voila! You’ll never want to leave your home again. 😉

These pillow covers are some of my favorite to add during Christmas time!! Add them to your Christmas list even, then you’d have some for free!

3. Add Some Seasonal Scents

A couple of different ways to add seasonal scents to your home and turn it into a cozy and inviting space are:

Baking your kids their winter favorite treats

There’s nothing better than freshly baked cookies out on display on the kitchen countertops! It makes any kitchen inviting and smell so good! Nothing beats the smell of freshly baked cookies on cold winter evenings, am I right?

Plus, yummy treats always makes my family really happy, more relaxed, and ready to start the day off on the right foot. And believe me, with a three-year-old daughter, that’s a big achievement!

Every year, my daughter and I go to my Mom’s house and make homemade Christmas sugar cookies. We use fun cookie cutters to make them in holiday shapes like trees, bells, and Santa hats.

We make our own icing too and mix with food coloring to decorate! It’s definitely one of our favorite Christmas traditions!

Not only are the cookies AMAZING, but those memories will last forever for all of us. 🙂

Adding warm essential oil diffusers

Another tip to add some warming and wintery scents to your home is to purchase warm essential oils & diffusers.

Revive essential oils are great to use! They are high quality at a fraction of the price – especially if you’re like me and mainly just use oils to diffuse.

I love diffusing these in my home. You can get $10 off $50 for your first order at Revive here!

Two of my favorite oil recipes to diffuse are:

CHRISTMAS MORNING
  • 4 drops Christmas Spirit
  • 3 drops Vanilla
WARM & COZY
  • 3 drops Orange
  • 3 drops Cinnamon
  • 3 drops vanilla

Something about these warm scents during winter can help me relax, and uplift my spirit. After all, essential oils are part of God’s natural creations for a reason. 🙂

If you’re looking for recommendations, I personally love this diffuser from Amazon. Not only does it work great, but it’s also super affordable + has an auto shut off feature!
